3 Reasons Cleaning Wipes Alone Are Not Enough To Clean Your Home

Many individuals are purchasing as many cleaning wipes as they can from stores across the area. While these wipes may seem like the ultimate tool to keep your home clean and combat COVID-19, they are simply not enough. These wipes are often not used properly and do not fully clean your home because:

  1. Many Are Antibacterial – Not Antiviral

  2. Contact Time Isn’t Met

  3. Clean Surfaces Are Required

Let’s review the three reasons cleaning wipes are simply for cleaning your home in detail.

1. Many Are Antibacterial – Not Antiviral

Bacteria and viruses are two incredibly different germs that can cause you and your family to feel ill. Bacteria are much easier to kill than viruses, so most of the popular cleaning wipes available in stores are focused on their antibacterial properties. Many of these brands market their products as disinfectants, which only means they are highly antibacterial. However, to an unsuspecting consumer, this can make the wipes seem better than they really are. Approved cleaning solutions recommended by the CDC are the best way to kill viruses and bacteria in your home.

2. Contact Time Isn’t Met

The solution used in popular over the counter wipes require specific contact time in order to be effective in the many bacteria and few viruses they are intended to kill. Contact time refers to the moment a wet wipe touches a surface until the solution dries. If the wipe you are using is not fully saturated, it will not meet the minimum contact time and, therefore, will not kill the number of germs the bottle claims. You cannot control how saturated these wipes are in the bottle, so you cannot be sure if you will meet the full contact time. In addition, if you wipe down the surface before it naturally dries, you will stop the process altogether.

3. Clean Surfaces Are Required

It can be incredibly tempting to use a cleaning wipe to both clean and sanitize a space. Afterall, it seems like the perfect time saver! The grooves in the wipe can trap the crumbs while the solution kills germs, right? Unfortunately, this will only clean the surface. In order to actually sanitize the area, you must first clean the surface and then allow the wipe to complete its recommended contact time. If the surface is not clean, it will not begin to disinfect the area.
